Profile Feature: Ogee Skirting Board

Ogee Skirting Boards Profiles, also called Regency, still remain as darlings of the construction industry. Widely used when revamping Victorian houses, this style is also a top fit for modern interiors calling for a dash of luxury.

In this guide, you'll get a quick roundup of all the things you need to know to choose the perfect Ogee Skirting for your home renovation or construction project.

What is an Ogee Skirting Board?

To be clear, 'Ogee' is the name of a type of profile used on skirting boards and architraves.

The Ogee skirting profile has been present in homes around the UK for centuries! This staple piece of moulding has made its way into the 21st century but reached its peak in the Victorian days.

Back then, proud home-owners would fit tall skirting boards -of up to 30 cm- to convey status, luxury, and also hide traces of poor construction and dump.

What is the shape of an Ogee Skirting Board?

The main feature of an Ogee or Regency profile is the 'S' shape created by what's known as the 'Ogee's sweeping curve,' moulded on the top section of the board. This 'S' looks a bit like a wave ending up in a carved line running just below it.

There are, of course, varieties in design. You could find an Ogee with a prominent rounded top edge, or the most delicate style with a soft curve and a thin line carved underneath.

Why choose Ogee Skirting Boards?

The Ogee is the most ornamented profile among the top skirting boards styles in fashion till these days. Again, it's not only used for renovations of Victorian houses but is also present in modern residences with an extra quote of style.

Quite elegant and classical, when combined with Ogee Architraves, it adds texture to any interior.

How to choose an Ogee Skirting Board?

Thickness

Following the standard thickness of skirting boards, all Ogee boards come at 18 mm.

Height

At the Skirting Board Shop, you'll find different height options spanning from 57 mm and 68 mm, all the way up to 168 mm.

In general lines, the industry norm for skirting boards height is 144/145 mm

Standard ceiling heights in new builds average 2.4 - 2.6 metres. Period homes feature about 2.8 to over 3 metres, depending on the room.

So the height of the skirting board you choose would depend on how much you want it to stand out. Keep in mind that as the Ogee profile is already adorned, it will become more noticeable if you choose the top width options.

Finishing

If you are planning to create a focal point with your mouldings -and create your own version of coloured skirting boards- you could consider a white primed board.

For a hands-off skirting board experience, there are many fully finished ones available at the Skirting Board Shop.
